IMADR is looking for a full-time intern for the period of three months starting on 1 July 2019.

International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR) is an international non-profit, non-governmental human rights organisation devoted to eliminating discrimination and racism, forging international solidarity among discriminated minorities and advancing the international human rights system. It was founded in 1988 by one of the Japan’s largest minorities, Buraku people. IMADR has grown to be a global network of concerned individuals and groups in Asia, Europe, North and Latin America.

Aim:

The aim of our internship programme is to provide a human rights activist or student committed to working on human rights issues, in particular combating racism and racial discrimination, with on-the-job training to familiarise herself/himself with the UN human rights mechanisms. Through the internship, the intern will be involved in the work of IMADR at the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) and the Human Rights Council. The Geneva office is a small office with one full-time staff member, therefore the intern will have an opportunity to carry out responsible work.

Period: 1 July to 27 September 2019 (dates negotiable)

Location: Geneva, Switzerland

Role: Assisting the Geneva office at the 41st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC, 24 June – 12 July), the 99th session of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD, 5 – 29 August) and the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC, 9 – 27 September).

Duties:

  1. Assisting human rights defenders in advocacy at the UN human rights system.
  2. Taking notes during the CERD and HRC sessions including meetings and side-events.
  3. Assisting in organising side-events at the HRC sessions.
  4. Preparing news items and advocacy tools, i.e. oral statements and written submissions.
  5. Assisting in admin work/basic documentation.

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in human rights, law, international relations or relevant areas.
  • Strong communications skills in English.
  • Good team-working and research skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and internet).
  • Interest and knowledge of issues relating to racial discrimination, i.e. minority rights, indigenous rights, human rights of migrants, multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, discrimination based on work and descent.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of French or Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the UN human rights mechanisms, in particular the Human Rights Council and treaty bodies.
  • Experience of working in the NGO environment.

Financial and other forms of assistance:

IMADR is currently not in a position to remunerate this internship or apply for a visa. Although we do not provide any kind of accommodation coverage, our office can help finding lodging in Geneva upon request. Monthly transportation within Geneva and lunch will be covered. The intern must be able to commit for a minimum of 35 hours per week for 3 months, be a Swiss/ EU national or hold a valid permit which allows staying and undertaking internship in Switzerland.

The Communication Officer is part of the communication team and work as the co-editor for our website**.** He/she will provide editorial, strategic, creative and operational support across the work. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the director of communication, the communication team and programme executives;
  • Help maintain and build reputation;
  • Increase the organisation’s profile across media, and with influencers and organisations;
  • Support staff to make effective use of brand;
  • Write press releases, articles and statements;
  • Draft, edit and distribute materials for the press, for stakeholders and for ecumenical partners;
  • Fielding inquiries from stakeholders including journalists, politicians and service users;
  • Develop, manage, update, write and coordinate content for the website;
  • Maintain social media accounts ;
  • Support the implementation of a social media strategy;
  • Help market and communicate events;
  • Provide creative, editorial and operational support for communications projects;
  • Plan/create multi-media communications materials;
  • Report on and analyse all aspects of communications;
  • Participate in cross-functional projects;
  • Keep up to date on best practice within the ecumenical sector/NGO sector generally and particularly changes to communications innovation, legislation and codes of practice;
  • Any other responsibilities as requested by the director of communication.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3 to 7 years’ experience;
  • University degree (Master) in communications;
  • Good command of oral and written English and knowledge of other languages (French, German, and Spanish) is an asset;
  • Information technology: Word, Excel, Internet, social media, etc…

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading

UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and

non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Labour Mobility and Human Development (LHD) Division in the Department of Migration Management (DMM) is the focal point for IOMs policy and programme development in the area of labour migration and human development. The Division’s work focuses on enhanced migration management by governments and assistance to migrants through the development of policies and programmes that promote legal channels for human mobility and maximize the benefits of migration for development and well-being. The Division provides guidance to LHD’s Regional Thematic Specialists (RTSs), reviews labour migration and human development projects developed by IOM Missions to ensure technical and programme quality and that project planning and development are consistent with IOM’s mandate and standards. The overall objective is to ensure the coherence of purpose and strategy among the various activities within the LHD Division. During project implementation the LHD Division also provides technical support to IOM field missions, as needed. Through research and dissemination of good practices, the LHD Division keeps the Organization up to date on labour migration and human development trends in order to improve project development and the delivery of services to governments and migrants.

SUPERVISION

The successful candidate will work under direct supervision of the Head of LHD Division in cooperation and coordination of LHD Unit Heads and other DMM and IOM Geneva based divisions.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Provide support in the mapping of existing and available public information materials, help in identifying needs for new and updated ones.

  2. Assist in drafting, coordinating inputs, producing and disseminating new public information and visibility materials for the LHD Division.

  3. Based on LHD needs analysis and plan for the way forward, supports in developing, collecting, coordinating inputs and updating the Division’s website and Sharepoint knowledge management platform. In communication with the Division Head, regional LHD specialists and units’ heads, keep the sites up-to-date, place visibility materials, news and products of the Division and partners when necessary.

  4. Support and advise the Division Head on media, public information, event management and visibility issues.

  5. Assist in communicating news and updates through the webpage and social media sources.

  6. Support the division in knowledge management, propose ways for further improvement and effectiveness.

  7. Provide support in monitoring the Divisions news, trends in development, labour migration, human mobility and integration policies and contribute to the knowledge management base through gathering lessons learned and identify best practices in activities related to labour migration and human development.

  8. Assist in working with field staff to produce content for the public information materials and knowledge management; supplement LHDs bank of photographs and video clips to be further used for public information materials.

  9. Support the Division Head in daily work related to Divisions general management and thematic aspects, organization of Division events, meetings, workshops and conferences, preparation of reports and notes for the files, coordination of inputs and proposal of contributions to organizational initiatives.

  10. Assist the Division Head and units in drafting talking points, speeches, preparing briefings notes and external communication materials.

  11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

The successful candidate will learn about the subject area of labour migration, human mobility and development. Learn and practice development of public information materials, elaborating, maintaining and updating of a website and a Sharepoint platform. Distribute and communicate public information materials and news. Exposure to managing knowledge platforms, collection and systematization. Manage organization of meetings, conferences and workshops as well as reporting.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

University degree in communication, media and journalism (preferable with a focus on migration and international development), or political and social sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

• Having a master’s degree can be an advantage;

• Strong analytical and writing skills;

• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;

• Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently;

• Interest and knowledge in migrantion issues is advantage.

• Strong writing and editing skills utilizing all Office applications, in particular Office 365, Sharepoint, Teams.

• Strong research skills utilizing internet applications and use of databases.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
