IMADR is looking for a full-time intern for the period of three months starting on 1 July 2019.
International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR) is an international non-profit, non-governmental human rights organisation devoted to eliminating discrimination and racism, forging international solidarity among discriminated minorities and advancing the international human rights system. It was founded in 1988 by one of the Japan’s largest minorities, Buraku people. IMADR has grown to be a global network of concerned individuals and groups in Asia, Europe, North and Latin America.
The aim of our internship programme is to provide a human rights activist or student committed to working on human rights issues, in particular combating racism and racial discrimination, with on-the-job training to familiarise herself/himself with the UN human rights mechanisms. Through the internship, the intern will be involved in the work of IMADR at the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) and the Human Rights Council. The Geneva office is a small office with one full-time staff member, therefore the intern will have an opportunity to carry out responsible work.
Period: 1 July to 27 September 2019 (dates negotiable)
Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Role: Assisting the Geneva office at the 41st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC, 24 June – 12 July), the 99th session of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD, 5 – 29 August) and the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC, 9 – 27 September).
Financial and other forms of assistance:
IMADR is currently not in a position to remunerate this internship or apply for a visa. Although we do not provide any kind of accommodation coverage, our office can help finding lodging in Geneva upon request. Monthly transportation within Geneva and lunch will be covered. The intern must be able to commit for a minimum of 35 hours per week for 3 months, be a Swiss/ EU national or hold a valid permit which allows staying and undertaking internship in Switzerland.

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading
UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and
non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
The Labour Mobility and Human Development (LHD) Division in the Department of Migration Management (DMM) is the focal point for IOMs policy and programme development in the area of labour migration and human development. The Division’s work focuses on enhanced migration management by governments and assistance to migrants through the development of policies and programmes that promote legal channels for human mobility and maximize the benefits of migration for development and well-being. The Division provides guidance to LHD’s Regional Thematic Specialists (RTSs), reviews labour migration and human development projects developed by IOM Missions to ensure technical and programme quality and that project planning and development are consistent with IOM’s mandate and standards. The overall objective is to ensure the coherence of purpose and strategy among the various activities within the LHD Division. During project implementation the LHD Division also provides technical support to IOM field missions, as needed. Through research and dissemination of good practices, the LHD Division keeps the Organization up to date on labour migration and human development trends in order to improve project development and the delivery of services to governments and migrants.
The successful candidate will work under direct supervision of the Head of LHD Division in cooperation and coordination of LHD Unit Heads and other DMM and IOM Geneva based divisions.

Training Components and Learning Elements
The successful candidate will learn about the subject area of labour migration, human mobility and development. Learn and practice development of public information materials, elaborating, maintaining and updating of a website and a Sharepoint platform. Distribute and communicate public information materials and news. Exposure to managing knowledge platforms, collection and systematization. Manage organization of meetings, conferences and workshops as well as reporting.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
University degree in communication, media and journalism (preferable with a focus on migration and international development), or political and social sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution.
• Having a master’s degree can be an advantage;
• Strong analytical and writing skills;
• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
• Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently;
• Interest and knowledge in migrantion issues is advantage.
• Strong writing and editing skills utilizing all Office applications, in particular Office 365, Sharepoint, Teams.
• Strong research skills utilizing internet applications and use of databases.
Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
