UNICEF Private Fundraising and Partnerships (PFP) Division drives UNICEF’s engagement with the private sector through global support in Geneva, regional support through Regional Support Centres (RSCs) or small units supporting seven Regional Offices, and through a network of 34 UNICEF National Committees.The Programme Coordination Unit within PFP enables colleagues across the organisation to leverage game changing partnerships with UNICEF’s prioritized strategic private sector partners through development of “Impact Content” and by strategically connecting the “field” with the private sector.

How can you make a difference?

The purpose of this consultancy job is to support Pillar 1 of UNICEF’s Programme Coordination strategy, which is “Impact Content”. Impact Content is defined as a new set of investment cases and Accelerator Propositions for the private sector. These describe how Business, Key Influencers, and other Impact Plan audiences can create sustainable impact through partnership with UNICEF. Impact content is UNICEF’s strategic work for children “translated” for the private sector audience, using language that is compelling, investment-focused and easily understandable by corporations, individuals, and foundations.

The consultant(s) will provide writing services with a focus on tone and language, to produce compelling, quality products for Impact Content. It includes investment cases for each of the 5 Goal Areas of UNICEF’s Strategic Plan including an overview of each Goal and modular content focusing on specific areas of the Goal (e.g. quality education).

Main Tasks:

In this context, the Programme Coordination team is seeking one or more independent consultants to provide creative writing services to produce compelling, quality products, that can be used to engage the private sector and secure partnerships and quality income. The scope of the consultancy will include writing impact content in the following categories:

  • investment cases on UNICEF Strategic Plan goal areas (e.g. Education);
  • modular content that provides additional information on key themes of a particular goal area (e.g. skills development under the Education goal).
  • The Investment cases and modular content will need to resonate across all four audiences of the private sector (Business, high net worth individuals, foundations and individuals).


    Timeline: 01 November – 31 December 2018 (tentatively)

    Impact content: investment cases, modular content, and strategic propositions

  • Investment case brochure of between 8-12 pages; request sample.
  • For each investment case, between 2-4 related “deep dives” into sub-themes of 4 pages each.
  • Report to:

    The consultant will report to the Programme Specialist in the Programme Coordination Unit, based in Geneva, Switzerland.

    Work Place:

    The assignment is home-based with no expected travel.

    To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Advanced university degree in international development, marketing, or social sciences A first level university degree in combination with two (2) years additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant and progressively responsible professional work experience as a writer and with significant experience in writing and/or marketing for the private sector.
  • Extensive experience writing human interest materials, including the ability to rewrite initial content by audience.
  • Track record of writing for private sector audiences, including fundraising proposals, reports and knowledge products
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex international development concepts for a broad audience of public and private sector donors.
  • Exceptional English writing skills.
  • Experience in living and working in a development context, is a plus.
